ZIDANE’S MELANCHOLY alludes to a much-discussed event
on the periphery of the 2006 World Cup. One of the greatest
soccer idols, Zinédine Zidane of all people, fouled one of his
Italian opponents very badly in his last game for the French
national team. This event raised questions about the role and
status of football stars and the meaning of actions done in public. The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Krefeld will be closed for
thorough refurbishment in 2009. Five artists from Holland and
Germany are seizing this break in the building’s architectural
history and deploying their work and actions to address the
history of the building, the architecture of the Kaiser Wilhelm
Museum or the collection and the museum conditions under
which it is presented. They will be intervening strikingly in the
exhibition galleries and also in public areas of the city. The open
staircase in the foyer area, the shades on the windows and
the lawn and flagpoles outside the museum will be used as
performance areas. A project space in the museum will focus
information for the many actions, and at the same time give an
overview of the artists’ approach to their work.
